Portland's park system encompasses over 12,000 acres including Forest Park (one of the largest urban forests in the U.S.), natural areas, wildlife refuges, and urban parks with diverse ecosystems. Research permits ensure that scientific activities are conducted responsibly with minimal impact to park resources and visitors. This permit is required for all research involving specimen collection, installation of monitoring equipment, soil sampling, wildlife trapping, vegetation surveys, water quality testing, and other field research methods.
